About The Petal Dress
The Petal Dress is a lightly oversized, gathered dress with a dramatic, curved bodice. The sharp points are easy to sew due to the unique, vertically panelled construction of this dress, making this pattern suitable for confident beginners and beyond.
Easy, breezy, and trans-seasonal - the Petal Dress can be easily dressed up or down, and its roomy armscyes leave room for lots of layering (hello puff sleeves, turtlenecks, and baby tees!!!) Inspired by both the soft curves of a petal and the sharpness of armor, Petal is a shockingly versatile pattern that works just as well for the beach (in linen or a breezy cotton) as it does at a wedding (think organza, taffeta, or silk).

Model Sizing + Fabric:
- Anne (leopard) wears a mini-length Petal in size 5X, C/D cup view, with an additional Full Bust Adjustment of 3". Her measurements are 58" full chest, 48" underbust, and a 48" waist at 5'8" tall.
- Amanda (chambray) wears a midi-length Petal in size M, A/B cup view. Her measurements are 37" full chest, 34" underbust, and a 35" waist at 5'3" tall.
- Caeley (gingham) wears a mini-length Petal in size XS, A/B cup view. Her measurements are 34.5" full chest, 33.5" high chest, and a 28" waist at 5'3" tall.
- Kaya (stripe) wears a midi-length Petal in size XL, A/B cup view. Her measurements are 40" high chest, 42" full chest, 40.5" underbust, and a 36" waist at 5'3" tall.
The Petal Dress was thoroughly fit-tested and previewed by over 30 sewists spanning the entire size range. Finished garment measurements and fabric requirements are included in the photos of this listing.
Upon purchase, files will be delivered via email with a link to download a .zip file. To unzip the file, follow the instructions for Microsoft/Windows or Apple/iOS devices accordingly.
Recommended Fabrics and Notions
Light to medium weight wovens (non-stretch) up to 6oz/200gsm are best suited for this pattern. Opt for fabrics with a crisp drape, such as cotton poplin, to highlight the structure of the garment or go with something drapier like linen for a relaxed look.
Suitable fabrics include cotton poplin, cotton lawn, cotton voile, seersucker, linen, linen blends, silk, organza, satin, taffeta, hemp, shirtings, chambray, and lightweight suitings.
Notions:
• 2 - 5m (2.25 - 5.5 yds) of pre-washed fabric
• Matching thread
• If buying premade bias tape: 2.25-3.25 m (2.5-3.5 yds) of 1cm (3/8”) double-fold bias tape, in a matching or contrasting colour (this will be visible on the final garment)
• Pins/clips
• Sewing machine!
• Optional: serger
